FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General Questions

1) Can I participate in this study remotely?

Yes, there will be no in-person contact. All communications will be conducted via email, phone call, or video call.

2) How can I receive the maximum compensation from the study?

You will be compensated with a $30 Amazon gift card if you complete all three study parts. However, if you have over 80% compliance on the smartphone-based surveys, you will be compensated with an additional $20 Amazon gift card. 4) I have multiple email addresses, which one should I provide to you?

We will regularly contact you via email throughout the study, and we will use your email address to send your Amazon gift card after data collection is over, so you should provide one that you check regularly and will have access to for an extended period of time. If you prefer, you can provide us with a secondary email address for when we can’t reach your primary one.

5) When will I receive my Amazon gift card?

The initial compensation for completing all three study parts ($30) will be distributed within one month after you complete the study. Questions about Actigraphy Watch

1) When should I wear the watch?

Please wear the watch ALL the time, day and night. Since the watch measures wrist movement activity, it is ideal that we capture your movements when you are awake and asleep, so we can detect normal patterns of wake and sleep.

2) How can I tell if the watch is working correctly?

You can tell that the watch is collecting data if the time and flashing bars appear. If you do not see this, please contact us immediately at usfstealthlab@gmail.com or (813)-658-8653.

3) When and for how long can I have the watch off?

We ask that you please keep the watch on as much as possible. If it becomes uncomfortable when sleeping, you can try placing a sweatband underneath to make it more comfortable. Remove the watch when you go swimming and when the watch is at risk of being exposed to excessive impact, extreme temperatures, or abrasive chemicals. Examples of when you should take off the watch include going into saunas, hot tubs, engaging in contact sports, or when working with abrasive chemicals. If the watch becomes excessively uncomfortable for any given reason, please feel free to reach out to us via either email (usfstealthlab@gmail.com) or telephone (813-658-8653). Please do not take the watch off for more than 4 hours/day or we cannot count this as a valid day of dataAdditionally, please do not have the watch off before going to bed and waking up from sleep. This will help us avoid any confusion when scoring your bed and wake times.

4) Can I take the watch off while I am sleeping?

No, you should not take off your watch while sleeping because this day will become invalid and we will not be able to use the data.

5) How and when do I indicate when I am going to sleep?

Click and hold the smaller button (located on the left of the watch) for 3 seconds when going to bed and waking up (this includes naps). After holding the button down for 3 seconds, the screen of the watch will have flashing bars and no numbers on the screen. This indicates that the watch registered that you pushed the button. The watch is not able to differentiate between bedtime and waketime, so if you forget to click the button, you can just proceed as normally the next time you go to bed or wake up.

6) I noticed the time on the watch is wrong, what should I do?

Please email us at usfstealthlab@gmail.com or call at (813)-658-8653.

7) Am I allowed to clean the watch at all during the two-week period?

The watches provided to the participants of the study will be thoroughly cleaned as described in the sanitation slip sent with your study package. However, if the watch gets dirty due to a workout or something of this nature, you can wipe the watch with a warm washcloth. You can also gently wipe the watch with an alcohol wipe, like the one provided in your package. You can do this as frequently as you need to, but please do not scrub the watch with the alcohol wipe or use any other disinfectant wipe. Please do not submerge the entire watch in water.

8) Why is the watch so plain-looking?

The watch was made as a research-grade device, and because it was created with the purpose of collecting pertinent movement data, aesthetics were not really taken into account in its design.

9) What happens if I lose my watch?

Please contact us IMMEDIATELY via email at usfstealthlab@gmail.com or via phone call at (813)-658-8653 if this should occur.

10) I am right-handed, and I already wear a watch on my left hand. Can I wear the watch on my right hand?

No, please wear the watch on your non-dominant hand (in this scenario, your left hand). You can wear your previously owned watch and our watch on the same hand. Alternatively, you can wear only the study’s watch on your non-dominant hand, given that it accurately displays the time, and your watch on your dominant hand. The importance of wearing the study’s watch on your non-dominant hand is because your non-dominant hand is generally less active, and thus, less likely to give us a false reading when we score your data

Questions about Smartphone-Based Surveys

1) What is the name and password for our LifePak?

The name of the LifePak is “STEALTH Moffitt Outpatient MM-DD-YYYY.” The password is “moffitt20” (all lowercase).

2) Will I get a notification to complete the background survey?

No, the background survey is a startup survey so you will complete it once at the beginning of your study. You will not receive any notifications for the smartphone-based surveys until after completing the background survey.

3) What times should I complete the surveys?

When you download LifePak, you will complete a background survey to answer questions regarding your basic sociodemographics and other relevant background information. Once the background survey is completed, there are four surveys per day for 14 days. The surveys include 1) upon waking, 2) before lunch, 3) in the afternoon, and 4) before bedtime. For the upon waking survey, we ask that you set an alarm or reminder for when you wake in the morning because the app will not send you a notification for this survey. After this, you will receive notifications to complete the before lunch (11 AM) and afternoon (3 PM) surveys. Each of these surveys will expire one hour and 30min from the initial notification time, so please remember to take them as soon as possible. The before bedtime (8 PM) survey will expire after three hours ( at 11 PM).

4) Will the notification disappear after I complete the surveys?

The upon waking survey will always be resting in your app, 24/7, regardless of if you have completed it for the day. This is indicated by the small person with a “1” superscript under “My LifePaks”. All other surveys are indicated by the bell icon under “My LifePaks”. These will be present from the initial time of the surveys (i.e., 11 AM, 3 PM, or 8 PM) until you either complete the survey or the survey expires after one hour and 30min for 11 AM and 3 PM surveys and after three hours for 8 PM survey.

5) I missed a survey (or more than one), what should I do?

Ideally, you will complete all surveys. However, if you miss one, you can proceed as usual with the next survey. Try your best not to miss more so that you don’t miss out on the additional compensation!

6) What if I forget to complete the upon waking survey first thing in the morning?

Ideally, we would really appreciate it if you could complete it within the first 5-10 minutes of waking, but if you forget, please try to complete it as early as possible so that you don’t forget your previous night’s sleep characteristics. Do not complete the upon waking survey if you have been awake for more than one hour. Unfortunately, we do not have a notification for the first survey because we do not want the notification to wake you up earlier than you want to. We recommend setting a reminder or alarm on your phone for the time you plan to wake up. This can serve as your notification for the upon waking survey.

7) What happens if I sleep in on the weekend and don’t get up according to my normal work schedule?

If you happen to be sleeping in, we ask that you answer the upon waking survey when you get up. If the before lunch session is still active (11 AM to 12 PM), we ask that you complete that survey in addition to the upon waking survey. If that has passed, that is not a problem; please carry on with the next surveys.

8) I am not receiving notifications for the surveys. Do you know what could cause this?

1. First, please check that your notifications are on.

2. Second, please make sure that you completed the background survey. You will not receive notifications for the daily surveys until the background survey is completed.
